MODULE FIVE: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
RECOMMENDED DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION OF ALL MODULES: JULY 15, 2017
Module 5 Overview
In this module you will have the opportunity to make some more “visits” to early language classrooms. You will see teachers working with different grade levels and different languages, but all working within the same general philosophy.
Things to look for and think about as you view:
* What do you notice about the behavior of children of this age?
* List the activities that you observe.
* How many different activities did the students do?
* What does the teacher do to keep the learners on task?
* Do you see any adaptations by the teacher for individual student differences?
* What activity in the class segment you observed seems to be especially appealing to this group of students?
* What kinds of reading and writing activities did you observe?
* What does the teacher do to make the students comfortable in the classroom?
* How does the teacher encourage student use of language in the classroom?
* What standards are included in this lesson?
Activity 1 - Watching an entire lesson (Frau Haberlen's classroom)
- View Holidays and Seasons (Annenberg Foundation 2015). Use the questions to guide your observation of this German classroom, filmed to demonstrate the use of the five C’s in language instruction. Pay special note to the use of these standards in the lesson: which standards are clearly demonstrated in the class? How does Frau Haberlen weave them together?
Grade 3 German class, Margita Haberlen, teacher: http://www.learner.org/libraries/tfl/german/haberlen/index.html
Activity 2 – Choice of videos from Annenberg Collection
- Select two (2) videos of your choice to view. Choose a language proficiency level or grade level that interests you. You can get the English captions for classrooms that are in languages you do not know by clicking the “cc” on the screen. Continue to add ideas to your strategies list from previous modules.
- Link to Annenberg Foundation Video Organizer: http://www.learner.org/libraries/tfl/video/video_organizer_01.html
Note: To view the videos, select the video you want but clicking on the title. You will be taken to a new page. On the second page, there is a menu of options on the left. Select "View and Analyze Video" from the list on the left to actually see the video. There are guiding questions and helpful information to guide your viewing and analysis.
Activity 3 - Blog Entry
- List some insights on teaching and learning that you have gained from these modules. Provide examples to illustrate your points.
