Minchun, Your observations are accurate and insightful. Your description of the importance of comprehension checks is well articulated. We will be anxious to see you put this into effect in your micro-teaching.

Like Yanhong and Minchun have summarized, comprehension check includes verbal and non-verbal strategies. Both have many different tactics. I find the numbered heads together very interesting. Here is a more detailed guide. The teacher come up with a question. Students have to think for the answer alone. Next, they need to write down their own answers on paper or other boards. Then, they need to pair up to discuss their answers and reach consensus on a team answer. Finally, each group could tell the whole classroom final answers. Each step might have different forms a bit. For me, this kind of comprehension check combines the verbal and non –verbal strategies. It is very helpful language learning.

In terms of the comprehension checking strategies, I found pretty much the same like the other three teachers did.

Of course checking understanding is important. It gives teacher feedback immediate so teachers can adjust lesson according to student's real learning situation. Checking understanding is also a way to push or motivate student engaging in class instruction.

Comprehension checks is essential in a language learning classroom. As the professor in the video pointed out, "comprehensible input" does not mean "students understand". It is always "students" who decide if the input is comprehensible or not, if our instructions are clear or not. If the class keeps moving on without fully checking every student's comprehension, students might feel confused and anxious, and could not process and intake the new information well before any production tasks. Comprehension checks need to be done frequently and quickly so to practice comprehension checks with students at first is also important. Also, some students might not want to show they don't understand even they don't understand because it is embarrassing if everybody understands except you. Or students don't take it seriously and just look around and copy how everybody else shows. Hence, we need strategies such as having students close eyes when they do thumbs up/down or using fingers to show 0-10 comprehension. In this sense, we should let students know "Comprehension checks" is important to lead towards their success at the beginning of the class.

How do you know what your students know? Comprehension checks are essential because they assist us in answering this question. They allow us to gather evidence that students have acquired the substance and content of tasks. They also give us an effective way to monitor progress and recognize "a-ha" moments.
